Manchester United have reported a loss after tax for the seventh year in a row, with the amount climbing by nearly one third to £43 million. This occurred even as the club achieved its highest-ever income. The financial report for the period ending June 30 indicates that while the fundamental business was robust, one-time expenses and a major commitment to upgrading their home ground affected the bottom line.
Income grew by 1.7 per cent to reach a new peak of £677.6 million. A rise in broadcast earnings of almost 20 per cent was a key factor, stemming from the team securing a top-three league position and a spot in Europe's premier club competition under their manager. However, this improvement was balanced by declines in both sponsorship and ticket sales revenue of approximately five per cent, due to the absence of continental tournaments in the previous campaign.
Costs and stadium investment
The financial statement was influenced by £8.2 million in non-recurring charges, primarily connected to the exit of a previous head coach in January. A co-owner, who finalized an investment in early 2024, has implemented extensive savings initiatives to help manage these costs and higher debt servicing payments. A substantial expenditure was the acquisition of property next to their stadium for £63.5 million, intended for a future venue with a planned capacity of 100,000 spectators.
The club's chief executive highlighted the organizational changes reflected in the numbers. "This shows the direct impact of the work we have been doing over the past two years," he stated. "It also proves Manchester United’s enduring popularity and commercial strength."
The organization forecasts income to reach between £740 million and £760 million in the present fiscal year, supported by participation in the Champions League. This positive outlook is contrasted by a challenging beginning to the domestic league season. The team has earned only five points from its first five matches, placing them 12th in the division and matching their poorest opening run. Their latest sequence of results includes a single victory, two ties, and two losses.
With important squad members currently sidelined, attention shifts to stopping this negative trend. The next chance to do so is at their home ground on October 10th, against Tottenham Hotspur, who are positioned at the foot of the league table.
