James Garner has named former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidić as his childhood footballing hero. The Everton midfielder, who came through United's academy, also stated his move away from the club in 2022 was the correct decision for his development.
Garner began his youth career as a centre-back before shifting into midfield at the age of 15. He left Manchester United for Everton two years ago, a move he firmly believes was necessary. "The move to Goodison Park was the right decision for my development," Garner said.
Vidic influence and no regrets
His admiration for a former United great remains strong. Garner revealed. The 25-year-old insists he has no regrets about his departure, which came as he sought regular first-team football.
Garner's versatile performances for Everton recently earned him a late call-up to the England squad as a replacement, prompting him to cut short a holiday. National team manager Thomas Tuchel has previously praised the midfielder, comparing his style to that of Real Madrid's Federico Valverde.
His reflections come as Manchester United seek solutions in a mixed start to the season, sitting 12th in the Premier League with five points from five games. Supporters can also review the current standings as the season develops.
