Manchester United's next opponents Aston Villa have withdrawn their threat of legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher. The club stated on Monday it had accepted a public apology from the analyst, concluding a disagreement that started days earlier.

Villa had said on Friday they planned to start legal action over remarks they described as unacceptable from Carragher. The comments were made on the Stick to Football podcast, where the ex Liverpool player implied Villa boss Unai Emery would desire to lead a major club once more and said disapproving supporters should be quiet.

Carragher's apology

Carragher posted a complete apology online on Saturday, calling his wording awkward and incorrect. He said his statements were intended as a joke and he wished Aston Villa well, using the club's UTV slogan. Villa officials confirmed by Monday that the legal threat was removed after this apology.

The event showed existing strains as Villa, with owner Nassef Sawiris, have become a Champions League side with Emery. The coach arrived in 2022 and led them to a Europa League triumph the following year.

For Manchester United, attention turns back to football matters before facing Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday. United are 17th in the Premier League with seven points from nine matches, after losing their previous three games. Their latest match was a 2 0 loss at Chelsea last Thursday. That defeat, where Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, was part of a recent run of zero wins, one draw and four losses. The team has scored 10 goals this season but conceded 15, leaving them with a negative five goal difference and a significant 17 points behind the league leaders.

The team's leading scorer this campaign is Bryan Mbeumo with four goals. United will require his goalscoring and a better defensive performance to stop their bad run, which includes four defeats and one draw from the past five games. That poor form includes a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth and a 4-1 defeat at Como.
