Extension of Temporary Car Park
Manchester United has submitted a planning application to the local council to extend the life of a temporary car park at the Carrington training ground for an additional three years. The extension is part of the club’s £50 million refurbishment works at the complex. The temporary facility was originally installed to accommodate contractors during the ongoing works.
Police Concerns and Security Measures
Counter-terrorism officers from Greater Manchester Police have evaluated the proposal and have ‘implored’ the club to increase security measures if the application is approved. Police noted the lack of a secure entry and exit point for visitors and urged the provision of suitable secure pedestrian access to ensure every visitor is vetted. They also warned of the prospect of ‘bad actors’ entering the site among a group of pedestrians. The police assessment was prompted by the high-profile nature of the training ground and the involvement of counter-terrorism colleagues.
Local Community Objections
Friends of Carrington Moss, an action group, filed a four-page objection to the planning application. The group criticised United for not consulting the community before submission, claiming the approval would increase car dependency and that the project was not a sustainable development. They also alleged that the club removed two mature trees and stripped other vegetation. The objection highlighted that the car park was fully in use by March 2025, contrary to the club’s suggestion that it would be operational by August. The group branded the club as ‘shameful’ and pointed out that United’s claim of being a world-leading football club does not extend to sustainable operations.
