Manchester United's transfer deadline day is dominated by their ongoing search for a new left-back, a position they have targeted all summer without success. The club, currently 10th in the Premier League with three points from two games, is linked with multiple defenders as the window closes.
United have scored five goals but conceded four in their opening fixtures, leaving them three points behind leaders Manchester City. The squad is also managing absences, with Amad Diallo, Carlos Baleba, Manuel Ugarte, and Tom Heaton currently sidelined.
Several names have emerged as potential solutions for Erik ten Hag's side. RB Leipzig's David Raum, Fulham's Antonee Robinson, and Fenerbahce's English defender Archie Brown have all been mentioned. The most concrete link appears to be with Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas, who United have tracked throughout the window. A deal for Salinas could reportedly be completed for a fee around €16 million (£13.7 million). Any incoming defender could trigger the departure of young talent Harry Amass, with Burnley keen on the United youngster.
The club is also connected to activity elsewhere. Former United winger Jadon Sancho, a £74 million signing whose contract has expired, is a free agent. His former club Borussia Dortmund is willing to sign him on a heavily incentivised deal. Furthermore, United and rivals Liverpool have shown interest in Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi, a player also admired by Arsenal. This comes as Liverpool rejected a £30 million bid from Nottingham Forest for their own young midfielder, the highly-rated 19-year-old Trey Nyoni.
Activity across the league is frantic. Chelsea have identified Alex Scott, Lamine Camara, and Manu Koné as targets if Manchester City's pursuit of Enzo Fernández concludes. Real Madrid could listen to offers of around £60 million for Eduardo Camavinga. Everton, after missing out on other targets, should be able to finalise a loan return for Jack Grealish and sign Kenny Tete from Fulham, while Tim Iroegbunam moves to Hull. Iliman Ndiaye looks set for Manchester City after their deal for Cody Gakpo stalled.
In the EFL, Derby and Blackburn are battling to re-sign Brighton defender Eiran Cashin on loan. Wrexham are considering moves for Portsmouth's Adrian Segecic and Bristol City's Scott Twine, with a free transfer for Jamie Vardy remaining a possibility. Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder accused Wrexham of using "blanket bombing" tactics in their attempt to sign his player Callum O'Hare. Their next match is away at Goodison Park on September 6.
