Manchester United supporters are reportedly planning a minute's applause for former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota during their upcoming Premier League clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday. This fan-led initiative aims to honor Jota, who tragically passed away last year, following a similar show of respect from Liverpool fans.

Diogo Jota tragically lost his life last year in a road accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva. The proposed tribute by Manchester United fans follows previous displays of class from Liverpool supporters, who also honored Jota after his passing. This gesture seeks to transcend the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.

The specific proposal, as reported by Sport Bible, suggests fans participate in the 20th minute of the match, corresponding to Diogo Jota's squad number during his time at Anfield. Sport Bible claimed that a proposal was submitted to the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) to encourage this applause among fans.

However, JD Deitch, the chair of MUST, has denied Sport Bible's claim regarding their encouragement of the idea. It is understood that some Manchester United players have been made aware of the proposal, and the club itself has been informed, indicating that any such tribute should remain a fan-led initiative.

Following Diogo Jota's death, numerous tributes were made, including former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, captain Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Dalot laying floral tributes at Anfield. Should United supporters proceed with the applause, it would mark another significant moment of cross-club respect.

Beyond the planned tribute, the Premier League fixture at Old Trafford holds significant importance in the race for a Champions League spot next season. A victory for Michael Carrick's Manchester United would cement their position, while Arne Slot's Liverpool could leapfrog them with a win of their own, adding another layer of intensity to the derby.
