Manchester United hit Premier League transfer ceiling with just two spots left

Manchester United have completed three summer signings but face a hard cap under Premier League squad rules. Only two more non-homegrown players can join before the 25-man roster is locked for the 2026/27 season.

How the new arrivals fit the current United squad

United have already spent over £80 million on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while Karl Darlow arrived on a free transfer from Leeds. The trio boost United’s attacking and defensive options, but their inclusion tightens the squad’s composition under league regulations.

Premier League rules require 25-man squads to include 17 non-homegrown players and eight homegrown. Players born on or after January 1, 2005 don’t count against either quota, but those born in 2004 no longer qualify for the Under-21 exemption this season. That shift means Patrick Dorgu now occupies a non-homegrown slot, while Dan Gore and Toby Collyer fill homegrown berths.

Who’s in and who’s on the brink at Old Trafford

The non-homegrown group currently stands at 15 and includes new signings Santos and Tielemans. The rest of the list features Senne Lammens, Altay Bayındır, Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Joshua Zirkzee and Benjamin Sesko.

Among the homegrown players over 21 are Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford and Amad, who arrived as a teenager and qualifies via three seasons in England. But several could leave before the campaign starts.

Goalkeeper Radek Vitek is expected to depart despite playing in Saturday’s pre-season win over Wrexham. Gore and Collyer, who impressed against Wrexham, may also move on. If all three exit, United would still have eight homegrown players and free up two slots for non-homegrown recruits.

Injury and omission risks could open more doors

United might omit Manuel Ugarte from the 25-man squad if his serious injury sustained on World Cup duty prevents him from playing. Altay Bayındır could follow former teammate Andre Onana to the Turkish Super Lig. Those exits would create extra room for targets like Manu Kone, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

The current non-homegrown quota could still rise, giving Erik ten Hag flexibility to add depth or quality before the transfer window closes. But the clock is ticking, and United must balance ambition with the league’s strict roster limits.
