Manchester United are exploring a January transfer for Inter Milan defender Federico Di Marco. The potential move is seen as a sign that this season could be Luke Shaw's last as the club's primary left-back.
The 26-year-old Italian international is understood to be on a shortlist of options as the club plans for the future in that position. Shaw, who is currently sidelined with an injury, has been a mainstay at Old Trafford for over a decade but his long-term role is now under review.
Injury list grows
Shaw is one of five players currently unavailable, joining Amad Diallo, Carlos Baleba, Manuel Ugarte and Tom Heaton on the treatment table. His absence has forced manager Erik ten Hag to use alternative options at left-back during the early part of the campaign.
The club's planning comes amid a mixed start to the season, with United sitting 11th in the Premier League after taking four points from their first three games. They are already five points behind early leaders Manchester City.
Di Marco, a key part of Inter's Serie A-winning side, is valued for his attacking contributions and delivery from wide areas. Securing his signature in January would represent a significant investment in a problem position.
United's most recent outing was a 4-0 friendly win over Sabah FA, with goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Šeško and Lisandro Martínez. Fernandes is the team's top scorer this season with three goals. The focus now shifts to the Premier League, with a trip to face 19th-placed Fulham next on the fixtures list this weekend.
The club has not commented on the speculation surrounding Di Marco. Any move would likely depend on Inter's willingness to negotiate mid-season and the financial package involved.
