Manchester United's Paul McShane has joined YMU Football as a coach. The former Red Devil defender will bring his experience and expertise to the team.

What happened?

McShane's connection with Manchester United stretches back to his academy days, having joined the club's youth system and helped the team win the 2003 FA Youth Cup.

Although McShane never made a competitive senior appearance during his first spell at Old Trafford, he returned years later in a unique player-coach role.

In 2021, the former Republic of Ireland international rejoined United's academy setup after leaving Rochdale, combining coaching duties with playing in selected reserve fixtures to help guide younger players.

Why it matters for Manchester United

McShane's development continued away from Manchester, with McShane joining the Republic of Ireland Under-21 coaching staff in 2023 alongside Jim Crawford.

He later stepped into first-team football coaching with Huddersfield Town in 2025, but his time there ended in January 2026 after manager Lee Grant was dismissed, leading to McShane and fellow assistants Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and Jonathan Robinson leaving their roles.

What comes next?

Now, McShane begins a new chapter with YMU Football while continuing to build on the coaching foundations developed during his time at Manchester United.

As of the current season, Manchester United is standing at 3rd in the Premier League, with 71 points from 38 games, and a recent form of WWDWW. | Category | Value | | --- | --- | | League Standing | 3rd | | Points | 71 | | Recent Form | WWDWW | | Goals Scored | 69 | | Goals Conceded | 50 | The team's next fixture is against AC Milan at home on 2026-08-15.
