Deadline Approaches for United’s Left-Back Search
Manchester United are pushing to sign Alejandro Balde before the September 1 transfer deadline. The Barcelona left-back was omitted from the matchday squad for the club’s opening game of the season, and United have already reached out to his representatives to gauge interest.
Balde’s Status at Barcelona
Balde made 42 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona last season. Hamstring and muscle injuries kept him out for 10 matches. Despite his regular involvement under Hansi Flick, the Spanish club has left him out of the squad for the opener against Elche, signalling a possible exit. Flick explained that the club is “making a lot of changes” and that the situation is “a club situation” that will be resolved by the market’s end.
United’s Options
United are evaluating several left-back options. Luke Shaw has faced criticism for his role in Hull City’s second goal in a 2-0 defeat at the MKM Stadium. Harry Amass, who impressed in last season’s brief run, is being considered for increased minutes, but the youngster wants regular football. Balde remains a genuine target, with United reportedly making calls to Barcelona and the player’s camp.
Barcelona’s Squad Changes
Barcelona’s squad shuffle includes the return of former Manchester City star Joao Cancelo, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the club. Cancelo’s arrival adds competition for Balde alongside Gerard Martin. Balde’s omission from the matchday squad suggests a shift in the club’s plans.
Other Departures and Signings
In addition to Balde, Marc Casado, Hector Fort and Jules Kounde are also heading toward the exit. Casado had previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford after United showed initial interest in June, but the club instead moved forward with deals for Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million.
United’s Focus for the Rest of the Window
With the deadline fast approaching, United are prioritising other areas of the squad for the remainder of the summer window. The club’s transfer activity will determine whether Balde can be secured before the September 1 cut-off.
